STORY SAMPLE

The Gossamer Hills Bed and Breakfast is one of the most popular in the Napa Valley. One right turn off a winding two-lane road, a cobblestone path leads guests up to a two-story Victorian-style mansion. It’s a beautiful building, all of it painted in a dark shade of yellow with light brown trim. The property sits atop a hill that overlooks a neighboring vineyard. Cole’s grandparents used to own that vineyard before they sold it two decades ago. Now, they welcome nearly two dozen guests a night to stay in one of twelve rooms on the second floor of their home.

Cole’s grandparents are almost eighty now, but they don’t show it. They’re just about the busiest people I’ve ever known. Donald, Cole’s grandfather, is the chef. He learned to cook when he was in the army. He perfected his skills in France and ended up teaching at the culinary academy in the city. Cheryl, Cole’s grandmother, handles the business side of things. She’s also an artist. All of her oil paintings are hung in the common areas and in the rooms. She’s very protective of them. Last year, a guest tried to steal her painting of what the house looked like before they renovated it. Cheryl moved that painting back to her room with Donald.

Donald and Cheryl share a room on the south side of the ground floor nearest the entrance. Cole and I live in a guest room on the other side of the floor. Our room shares a wall with the kitchen, so it doesn’t take us long to get to where we work.

I tie the strap on my long blue apron and hike up my slacks. Hearing the noise of guests talking in the next room, I push open the rear door to the kitchen. There, Donald is hard at work on the griddle, an American flag bandanna tied over the top of his thick grey hair. He flips a pair of omelettes, then a half-dozen pancakes in rapid succession. The rich scent of cooked batter fills the air.

“Hey there, kiddo,” he says, gesturing back to the washing room. “Better get started back there, these folks from the city have been a hungry bunch.”

Just then, Cole walks in, carrying a tray of empty dishes. I follow him back to my steel-walled workstation where the dishwasher is set up. He lowers his tray and sets down the sticky dishes on top of the others already there. There isn’t a scrap of food on any of them. When he’s done, he sets down his tray and reaches up to my collar. I’m a few inches taller than him, but he can reach.

“Don’t forget to keep this tie straight, Kelly,” he says, tugging it side by side. “Like grandpa says, we’re all professionals here, and that’s what our guests pay for.” He brushes my sleeves, straightening out some of the rumples.

“Sorry about that, man,” I say. “Guess I’m still getting in the swing of things.”

“Hey, don’t worry about it,” says Cole, slapping my arm with his palm. “You’re doing great.” I smile. Cole is a great people person. He always knows the right thing to say.

Cole’s lived here for most of his life. His parents died in a car accident when he was four. Ever since then, Donald and Cheryl have raised him and trained him to take over the family business. Cole works as the only waiter in the dining room, but he’s good at lots of other things. I think I get in his way a lot, but hopefully I’ll get good enough so I can help him better.
